The Lake Foundation

Background
A series of articles in The Ballarat Courier in early June 2001 regarding the challenges facing Lake Wendouree was the catalyst for a proposal by Matt Jamieson to form The Lake Foundation.

The Lake Foundation : A Community Initiative
A community driven group would raise funds from certain events and apply for funding it may qualify for, to enable the Lake Masterplan to be completed and to provide a funded maintenance program for the future.

Fundraising Activities could include:

  • Foundation Walk which would offer residents the chance to sponsor a tree that would be named after them and planted during the walk.

  • Family Picnic Day on the first day of summer each year. A special yacht race would be held and roving entertainment provided. Service clubs could run barbecues and drink stalls with proceeds being donated to the Lake Foundation.

  • Photographic Competition for pictures of the Lake and its surrounds with the winners' pictures being published in a calendar, poster or book on the Lake.

  • School Competitions could be run with a specific goal in mind, such as 'Say Good-bye to Charlie Carp', with funds raised going to finance the eradication of carp.

  • Lake Lappers Lay-by which could be a collection point for joggers and walkers to make donations.

Incorporation of the Lake Foundation
The patronage of high-profile celebrities is being sought and the legal requirements of the process of incorporation have been investigated. The inaugural meeting of the Lake Foundation was held on 1st March 2002 and a motion was passed to incorporate the Lake Foundation as a not-for-profit organisation.
