Lake Wendouree and Ballarat Botanical Gardens Special
Committee of Council (1997) and its predecessor Lake Wendouree Special
Committee (1992) provides advice and makes recommendations to assist
Ballarat City Council in its management of the region's most visited
area.
The Committee's role is to:
- Ensure that the cultural, environmental and
aesthetic values of the precinct are maintained and developed.
- Develop policies, with the agreement of Council, in relation to the use
of public facilities in the reserve.
- Determine priorities and source external funding opportunities for the
implementation of the Masterplans for Lake Wendouree the Ballarat Botanical
Gardens. These could be for capital works projects, programs or studies
relating to the Lake and Gardens.
- Review applications for commercial licences and make recommendations to
Council about their suitability and proposed terms and conditions.
- Develop The Robert Clark Centre Business Plan and submit a draft
operating budget annually.
- Administer bequests and trust funds associated with the Gardens,
namely: Zoological Improvements Trust, Ballarat Gardens Community Fund and
the Prime Ministers Avenue Bequest.
- Liaise with interest groups and deal with any other matters that are
referred to the Committee.
The Committee membership consists of:
- The Mayor or nominated councillor
- Manager Lake Wendouree and Gardens
- Ballarat Begonia Festival Director
- Manager Parks and Environment (or delegate)
- Manager Community Development (or delegate)
- Representative of the Lake Wendouree Aquatic Association
- Representative of the Friends of Ballarat Botanical Gardens Inc.
- Representative of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment
- Representative of the Lake Wendouree and Gardens Tourism Operators Group
- Three Community Representatives
The membership reflects a range of interests and expertise
including commerce, environmental management and education, relevant
sciences, community involvement, sport and recreation. The Committee meets
monthly at The Robert Clark Centre. Presentations can be made by
individuals, groups and would-be commercial operators.
Sub-Committees:
Water Supply and Ecology Group is
investigating options for a sustainable water supply for Lake Wendouree and
developing costings for presentation to Council for implementation.
Funding, Community Involvement and Education
Sub-Committee supports the initiatives of the Lake Foundation, markets the Ballarat Botanical Gardens Community Fund, reviews and
supports the Adopt a Foreshore Program and oversees the development of
educational programs for the Lake and Gardens.
