The North Gardens Wetland was opened to the public on 27 July 2001. As well as improving the habitat for waterbirds, the wetland is a well-engineered retardation basin and filtering system which treats three quarters of the stormwater which flows into Lake Wendouree. To complete the flood mitigation works, the level of Wendouree Parade in this area will be raised. Further staged improvements to the Wetland include boardwalks, bird hides and interpretation signs.
The Wetland extends from Gregory Street to Wendouree Parade and consists of 3 ponds at different levels. In the first and highest pond there is a large circular gross litter trap.
Community and school groups have helped with the planting of native trees, sedges and grasses.
