Birds - page 1 of 4

Eastern Swamphen     Swamphen
The Purple Swamphen's scientific name is Porphyrio porphyrio which is Latin for 'giant giant'. This is the largest of the waterhens at the Lake. It is also the most attractive with its bright blue chest and red casque on its head which serves as a crash helmet for crashing through the reeds.

Coot   Coot in reeds

The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) has lobed toes for walking in mud and its ungainly walk has given rise to the saying 'silly coot".

Dusky Moorhen   Moorhens

Dusky Moorhens' (Gallinula tenebrosa) nests are bulky saucers of bent stems built by small groups of birds. The females mate with all the birds in their group.
