Ballarat's founders liked English trees so at the Lake the
old gums were felled and deciduous trees such as elms, oaks, poplars and
willows were planted. Mature specimens can be seen in Fairyland.

In the summer of 2000 the elm-leaf beetle was found in
Sturt Street and there was much concern that Ballarat's 5000 elm trees
could be threatened. Any sightings should be reported to the Ballarat City
Council. To learn more about this pest visit Friends of The
Elms
