About the Building

Clunes Museum is an historic building (circa 1860) the former warehouse of contractors Nichol and Wallace who supplied goods to the miners, farmers and residents, of what was then a very busy mining town.

The building was donated to the people of Clunes by Holly Barkell in memory of her husband. The Museum is owned by the Hepburn Shire Council and administered by volunteers

The Museum was established in 1976. Aiming to achieve excellence in Museum Management it was Accredited in May 1999, by the Museums Association Australia (Vic).

About the Interior

You will be welcomed in Reception by the volunteer on duty.

The Museum Shop sells Historic Publications relating to Clunes and surrounding areas, Souvenirs, Cards, Post Cards and Local Crafts. Tourist information and Maps are also available.

The Research Department officers will assist with enquiries about Clunes and District, and families tracing their "Clunes Connection".

Agricultural Display

The "Sir John Longstaff Kitchen" displays domestic items.

The "Laura Hudson Parlour' is a replica of a miners cottage parlour.

The "Rivett Bland Room" houses an interesting collection of Agricultural, Mining and Woodwork tools, Interknit Knitting Mill display, and the Naval Cannon which was presented to the Borough of Clunes , by the Victorian Navy.

An impressive staircase leads to two large galleries; "The Holly Barkell Gallery" and the "Mayors Room" displaying a fascinating collection depicting the former Borough of Clunes Council, Business , Church, Fire Brigade, Social, Mining, Health Care and Educational Life of the town in former years.

Saturday,  Sunday, Public and Public Holidays:  11am - 4.00pm
During School Holidays:  Friday, Saturday & Sunday 11am - 4pm
During Winter School Holidays: Saturday, Sunday & Monday, 11am - 3 pm.
Or by appointment.

Closed on the 24th, 25th, 26th of December and 1st of January
