Mt Lonarch Gallery is proud to present Australia's Finest Hand-Crafted and Hand-Decorated Bone China

Bone china has a delicately translucent nature and beautiful gloss, qualities for which it has always been cherished by fine china collectors, but behind this fragile facade lies the strongest of all vitreous fired clays.

Inspired by its tactile texture, Lorraine Lucey nurtured a desire to manufacture quality Australian-made bone china that would not only be hand-painted for sale as fine art, but also made available as white-ware for those wishing to create their own masterpieces.

Lorraine was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, travelling to England in 1990, studying the production and manufacture of bone china and ornamental casting with the masters. In1993 she returned to England, undertaking advanced tuition, personally overseen by Mr. G. Morris of Worcester.

Green-ware is produced by mixing clay and bone ash to a creamy consistency before pouring into molds. When ready, excess slip is removed and the remainder is left to air dry. Later the casting is removed from the mold, fettled, and left to further dry for up to three weeks. At this stage the green-ware has an eggshell fragility. An initial firing converts the casting to bisque-ware with a matte finish, after which it is glazed and re-fired to create white-ware with its beautiful gloss. Each firing requires in excess of 24 hours, reaching extremely high temperatures.

We take great pride in our pieces, which are of the finest quality, to delight hobbyists and serious collectors alike. You may also choose to commission a uniquely decorated bone china masterpiece.
