I n 2011 Ballarat & Queen's Anglican Grammar
School celebrates
100 years of Anglican Education in Ballarat. The two schools
which aamalgamated to form this School were controlled by what
was then known as the Church of England. Ballarat Grammar
is an independent school, with the Anglican Diocese of Ballarat
recognised in its constitution. The Bishop of Ballarat is President
of the School Company. The Diocese appoints five members to
the School's Board of Directors.
This Anglican heritage is valuable. It is our anchor. Our students
belong to a variety of Christian traditions~ some to other faith
communities~ and some to none. All students come week by
week to Chapel.
The first Chapel, a gift from the Diocese, was brought from an
old mining centre called Jerusalem at the beginning of 1912.
The second Chapel was brought from Allendale in late 1919 and
dedicated by the Bishop on 5 March 1920, as the Chapel of St.
Mark, so St. Mark became the Patron Saint of the School. The
present Chapel of St. Mark was consecrated on 29 November
1975 following the modification of Manifold Hall. The chancel and
sanctuary were added and the stage was raised to accommodate
the vestry below and the organ and choir stalls above.
The refurbished School Chapel houses the Fincham Organ
installed in January 2011. The Chapel accommodates 350
people. At a range of services, a total of about 1500 people
attend worship in a normal school week. The Chapel is also used
for weddings, baptisms and funerals for members of the wider
School community. |
