The
Castlemaine Town Hall is built on the former site of the Castlemaine
Municipal Chambers in Lyttleton St. which was destroyed by fire in 1862.
A competition was held to design a new building. The winning design came
from Messrs Wilkinson and Permewan. The new structure (the present Town
Hall) built by Mr H D McBean was based on the Dutch renaissance style.
The Town Hall has similar facial features to it's original design with
columned dressings and red brick.
The Castlemaine Town Hall was constructed in 1898 with extensions to the
west wing in 1984 where a town hall entrance foyer was built and an east
wing extension built in 1990 to accommodate Council offices.
The hall itself still maintains its original internal beauty where over
the past 100 years, weddings, dances, numerous concerts and hundreds of
functions have taken place on its 332 square meter floor space. Over
looking this large dance area is the decorative cast iron railed balcony
for those who wish to sit back, relax and enjoy a concert.
The Town Hall has a commercial kitchen for the larger events, an in
house public address system for announcers or vocalists, Yamaha grand
piano as well as a 26 square meter portable stage. Many performers have
graced the stage over the years including, The Delltones, Frankie J
Holden and the Melbourne Opera. The maximum persons allowed in the main
hall area are 375.
The maximum number of persons allowed in the balcony area is 125 with
the maximum allowable distributed load for the Town Hall Stage, 108kpa
or 180kg/square metre.
