The Peter Lalor Hotel first opened for business on the 9th July 1864 as the Royal Oak. Mr. W Boyd was the original Licensee. It later became known as the Royal Highlander, and remained as such for many years until it acquired its present title in 1971 to honour the memory of the heroic leader of the Eureka Stockade uprising in1854.
