Wickedly brilliant

BALLARAT Light Opera Company's production of Wicked has hit the stage - and it's brilliant.

The theatre is a place where you can go after a long day, expecting to escape into a wonderful world filled with light, life, mystery and intrigue.

Ballarat is lucky enough to have two amateur musical theatre companies, providing locals and visitors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in an alternate reality set against the backdrop of the iconic Her Majesty's Theatre.

BLOC's production of Wicked the Musical doesn't disappoint in this regard. The performance is filled with intricate sets, advanced production, powerful voices and spine-tingling musical numbers.

The show appeals to people of all ages - with strong female leads, an engaging ensemble and choreography that is on-point.

The production also features some rather impressive technical feats – think flying objects and a very intimidating mechanical Wizard of Oz!

And let's not forget about the chilling end to the first act (you'll have to see it to believe it).

Wicked is a prequel of sorts to The Wizard of Oz, telling the story of the witches of Oz before Dorothy popped in.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the show follows the friendship that develops between two women and how they became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Sometimes funny and at other times dramatic and moving, the musical takes audiences on a spellbinding journey into a world of surprises.

Wicked will be staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre until May 21, with matinees as well as evening shows kicking off at the new time of 7.30pm.
